Background

My name is Mara, I am 20 years old and I study Branding & Marketing Management at VIA University College in Herning. In my free time I draw, I write blogs and I have a podcast about makeup and psychology.
I also love tarot reading and I’ve been practicing it for years.

What were your considerations when you chose what to study?

I knew that I would have better job and learning opportunities here than in Romania as education in Denmark is more progressive and up to date. As a Branding & Marketing student, I have the chance to discover the marketing basics while getting real life examples of campaigns, a practice that is not found often in Romanian universities. If I could turn back time, I would choose Denmark again.

What was most important to you in the process?

What mattered the most was that I could develop while learning about a new culture. Danish culture is much more different that the culture I was raised in, which makes the whole process more challenging and fun.

What does the city of Herning offer international students?

The city of Herning offers international students the chance to build a career for themselves in a multicultural environment.

How do you meet new people?

I mostly meet new people from the ones I already know. The classmates I met in the beginning became my ride-or-die friends and through them I get to network with other people as well.

Where do you usually meet?

Most of my friends live in the same dorm as me, so we usually hangout at home.

How is the atmosphere at the education institutions and in Herning in general?

The atmosphere at my university is productive and pleasant at the same time. It combines hard work with the feeling of accomplishing something. On the other hand, Herning has a very cozy feeling, being a city that is not too big and not too small. If you come from a small city you will definitely love Herning.

Do you have a student job, and do you have any tips to finde one?

Yes, my only student job at the moment is being a student ambassador. The best way to get a job here is from networking, so make many friends! Networking is super duper important when it comes to job seeking and friend making. Denmark has an individualistic society. It can seem quite hard to make friends at first, but trust the process and try to be yourself – you will find your group in no time.

What are you career dreams?

My dream is to perfect my marketing skills and eventually work in a company that shares the same values that I have. I want to go to work and be happy with the career choice I made, hence why it is essential to find a company that I can resonate with.

What do you get here, that you don´t get anywhere else?

“Hygge.”

What is Herning’s biggest strength?

I think Herning biggest strength is the fact that it is a very young city as a lot of students live here. It’s a student city.

Can you imagine getting a job here and staying in area?

I can definitely imagine getting a job here and staying in the area because of the nature that surrounds the city. It feels very organic.
