Study in Herning
Hundreds of students
Herning has hundreds of international students – so if you decide to come to Herning to study from abroad you will definitely not be the only international student.
Education
The main further and higher education institutions with international study programmes in Herning are the divisions of Aarhus University and VIA University College.
Aarhus University Herning has two faculties represented in Herning that offer engineering and business programmes.
VIA University College in Herning focuses on Design and Business, and offers various AP, Bachelor and Exchange programmes in English. VIA University College in Herning also have Nurse and Tax educations.
Herning also has a Business Academy (Erhvervsakademi MidtVest) that offers professional bachelorate and AP programs, and a large technical college for vocational education. For the time being, they only offer programmes in Danish.
Housing in Herning
Both Aarhus University and VIA University College are based in Birk, including a campus area with hundreds of students – all just a few km east of Herning.
You can rent either from a housing association or a private landlord. There are student apartments in Birk and on several locations in Herning city and the surrounding area.
Housing associations
Three of the main housing associations in Herning – Fruehøjgaard, Fællesbo and Boligselskabet MidtVest – have a joint sign-up (Lejehuset.dk). We recommend using this free service, to find housing in Herning.
Another housing association is Lejerbo. To search for student apartments select “Ungdomsbolig”
Private rental
Private property for rent cannot be found in one central place, but there are a number of internet portals where available apartments and houses can be found. The most used is Boligportal.dk. If you rent from a private company or landlord you can usually find a room, a shared apartment or your own apartment.
Get first in line at the housing associations
Herning Municipality has an agreement with the housing associations (pendlerordning), which means that if your current address is more than 30 kilometers from Herning, and you have a fixed position in Herning or Ikast-Brande Municipality, you can get priority for an apartment.

Housing vocabulary
In Danish, the concept “to rent” is called “at leje”.
The agreement about skipping the line for housing, is called “Pendlerordning”.
Apartments specifically for students, are called “studiebolig” or “ungdomsbolig”
Make new friends and find a network
It’s important to get a network when you move to a new place. Apart from your fellow students, you can also meet new people by for example joining a club or an association.

International Society is a voluntary network hosting social events and activities for internationals, e.g. “Cook and Talk, Pub quiz and Thursday Hygge. The networks is for everyone interested, whether you are a student or have come here to work.
Do sports – join a club
